[PODCAST] Building a House Call Practice that Stands Out: The House Call Practice Model
Ryan DesJardins, Co-Owner of PDX At Home Veterinary Services, came on to talk about how to start and build a house call practice that stands out. He and his wife, Dr. Louise Mesher, DVM, took the leap to make their house call practice full time in 2010, and within one month, it skyrocketed!
They turned a part-time venture into a thriving team of house call veterinarians and technicians providing health care for pets throughout the Portland area and being the go-to experts in giving pets a better quality of life.
How did they do it?
By doing what no other practice was.
Focusing on how they’re different. Providing a level of care that offered comfort and compassion in a pet’s own environment. Knowing exactly who they are and the type of patients they wanted to attract.
And focusing all of their efforts into that vision.
So if you’re looking for a different way to practice and a different way to care for your community, start listening now.

Ryan DesJardins – Co-Owner - PDX At Home Veterinary Services: The House Call Practice Model at Work
Ryan is the co-owner of At Home Veterinary Services, a veterinary house call practice based in Lake Oswego, Oregon, which serves the Portland metro area. The practice was started as a part-time venture by his wife Dr. Louise Mesher in 2008.
In 2010, they took the practice full time and soon after, their house call practice grew rapidly. Today At Home Veterinary Services sends three doctors, along with certified veterinary technicians, to homes all over the Portland metro area to see dogs and cats in the comfort of their home. The focus of the practice is geriatric medicine, palliative, hospice and end of life care, although they do see their share of young healthy pets too.
After serving in the US Marine Corps and attending Washington State University, Ryan never imagined he’d be part of a veterinary house call practice. He spend 18 years in public safety and emergency communications (911) before leaving to help his wife with the practice. Making the change to small business owner was one of the best decisions he ever made.
